LGBT History Month on our network

This LGBT+ History Month, we are highlighting the most important historic locations and must-visit queer venues that you can get to on our network! This month is all about celebrating the history, contributions, and achievements of the LGBTQ+ community, and the following sites all have their own story to tell.
Nymans – 271/273
Nymans was the family home of Oliver Messel, one of the most important stage designers of the 20th Century. For 24 years, Oliver was in a same-gender relationship with Vagn Riis-Hansen, and both their ashes are interred together at the property. Until recently, only Oliver’s name was displayed on the memorial, but in 2024, Vagn’s were added at last. The house is now a partial ruin following a fire in 1947, but several rooms survive and are open to the public, some featuring paintings by Oliver himself. The Grade II listed gardens and surrounding ancient woodland are also well worth exploring. Get there on the 271/273.
The Hawth – Multiple Routes
An arts and entertainment venue just outside Crawley Town Centre, The Hawth’s programme often features drag shows, tribute acts and cabaret, including an upcoming performance from QUEENZ. Multiple Metrobus routes serve the area surrounding The Hawth Theatre, including Fastway Hydrogen routes.
The Pod – 2 (other routes within walking distance)
The Pod is run by Crawley LGBT+ (the organisers of Crawley Pride) who describe it as ‘a safe place for Crawley's LGBTQU+ community’. Offering drop-in sessions for those seeking support, as well as events like games nights, this vibrant community space can be found in Tilgate Park. Get there on the 2 and alight at K2 Leisure Centre or plan your journey with our journey planner.
Brighton – 270/271/272/273
Unofficially the UK’s LGBTQ+ capital, there are a huge range of queer entertainment venues in Brighton. Check out The Actors pub and theatre for queer theatre, comedy, community open mics and more, or Ironworks Studios for drag, cabaret and live music. The highest concentration of LGBTQ+ venues can be found on St. James’ Street, and larger venues such as Brighton Dome and The Old Market will also be hosting LGBTQ+ focused events this February. Get to Brighton on the 270, 271, 272 or 273.
