Hydrogen Buses

Looking for bus travel that doesn’t cost the earth?

This year we will see 54 new buses on the roads made up of 34 Hydrogen buses and 20 Fastway buses. With a new colourway, and logo, this exciting change comes a decade after the last one in 2015.

The buses will be made up of 43 single decks and 11 double decks, which have already started appearing on the roads. These new buses demonstrate our ongoing commitment to be a more sustainable and environmentally friendly brand.

Why Hydrogen?

Hydrogen buses are not only sustainable with the use of green hydrogen but also environmentally friendly due to the zero tailpipe emissions. Both of these combined help to tackle both climate change and improve air quality in our local area.

The refueling of the buses takes less than 10 minutes and they don’t need to be recharged or refueled throughout the day, so that’s more time out on the road serving our passengers.

Hydrogen buses offer a smoother and quieter ride, providing fewer vibrations when on the road, making the overall journey more comfortable. This also makes the buses ideal for the intensive 24/7 routes, operating 365 days a year, and heavy passenger loads.

Routes

The Hydrogen buses operate on the following routes:

  • Fastway routes 10, 20 and 100 to Gatwick Airport, Crawley, Horley and Redhill.
  • Fastway routes 10, 20 and 100, plus routes 420 and 460 connect Manor Royal Business District to Gatwick Airport and trains to London.
  • Services 430 and 435 operate in Surrey - Redhill, Reigate and Merstham.
  •  The route 420 operates from Crawley, West Sussex to Redhill, Reigate, Tadworth and Banstead in Surrey and Sutton in London
  • Routes 460 and 480 from Crawley and Gatwick Airport, West Sussex to Redhill, Reigate, Tadworth and Epsom in Surrey.

Liquid Fueling Station

Did you know that our liquid fuelling station is the biggest in UK? The facility can provide more than 1600kg of liquid hydrogen per day, meaning the fuelling station can deliver 160kg per hour across 10 hours. This capacity would allow our entire Crawley based fleet to operate using hydrogen, with a total of just over 140 vehicles.

The Future

We will continue to work alongside Surrey County Council as we expand our fleet, making it Europe's largest hydrogen bus fleet. We are excited for a greener future and to bring more benefits to local communities.
