New discount for students on Metrobus services

Following the confirmation of the withdrawal of the West Sussex County Council administered 3in1 scheme for discounted bus travel for young people, Metrobus has introduced a special new discount to students.

Full time students aged 16 and over can get 25% off adult fares for the purchase of Metrovoyager, Crawley Metrorider and Horsham Metrorider tickets.

To get the discount, students need to obtain a special key smartcard, which is free, from our Crawley Travel Shop at Crawley Bus Station. Proof of full time student status will be needed. The smartcard can be topped up with discounted tickets online or at the Metrobus travel shop in Crawley.

You can find out more about the key smartcard here

Students holding an existing 16-18 3in1 Metrobus key smartcard will be able to buy the new student tickets on their current card and use them until the card expires.

Child tickets

With the withdrawal of the 3in1 scheme, normal child fares will be charged to anyone aged 5-15. Holders of a Child 3in1 key smartcard will need to replace it with a Child key card at Crawley Travel Shop, free of charge on presentation of ID, in order to purchase discounted tickets on the key. Alternatively, child tickets are available on our mobile ticket app. Find out more about the apphere

Q&A's

Why are you changing the tickets?

We are introducing the new student tickets in response to the withdrawal of West Sussex County Council’s 3in1 scheme. The new tickets aren’t subsidised so we regret that the discount isn’t as generous as under the 3in1 scheme.

I have a Child 5-15 age 3in1 key card, what do I do?

You will need to register for a new Child Key card to receive the normal child rate on tickets purchased on the key as soon as possible. Sales of 3in1 Child tickets on the key will stop on 12th December but you can continue to purchase 1 week and 1 day child 3in1 tickets on the bus in cash until 31st December.

You will need to come into our Crawley Travel Shop with ID to register for a Child Key card. If you live a long way from Crawley and are struggling to come into the shop then please call us to discuss.

Any tickets that you have on your current card will be moved onto your new card so you won’t lose out.

Any 3in1 tickets that are activated and run beyond 31st December will continue to work until they expire as long as the card is still in date – you just won’t be able to purchase any further tickets on it.

I purchase Child 5-15 age 3in1 tickets on the app, what should I do?

You will be able to continue to buy these until 31st December but will not be able to start any tickets after then. You can continue to use activated tickets until they expire. After this, just start purchasing the normal Child m-tickets – you do not need to do anything to your account.

I purchase Child 5-15 age 3in1 tickets from the bus driver, what should I do?

Sales of 1 week and 1 day Child 3in1 tickets will continue until 31st December when only normal Child tickets will be available. 1 week 3in1 tickets that go beyond 31st December will be honoured for travel until expiry.

I have a Student 3in1 key card what do I do?

From 13th December you will be able to purchase the new student discounted ticket online or at Crawley travel shop. You do not need to get a new key card until your Student 3in1 key card expires. Any Student 3in1 tickets that are on your account can be used after this date, as long as they were activated before 31st December and the card is still valid – you just won’t be able to buy more on the key.

Student 3in1 tickets will still be available to purchase on the bus, with cash, until 31st December.

Any ticket lasting beyond 31st December will be honoured.

I purchase Student 3in1 tickets on the app, what do I do?

The new student discount won’t be available on the app so if you are eligible you will need to come into our Crawley Travel Shop and register for a Student key card from 13th December.

College or university ID or proof of enrolment can be used as ID to get a new student key card.

I purchase Student 3in1 tickets from the bus driver, what do I do?

Sales of 1 week and 1 day Student 3in1 tickets will continue until 31st December on the bus. 3in1 tickets that go beyond 31st December will be honoured for travel until they expire. If you are eligible for the new student discount then you will need to register for a student key card at Crawley Travel Shop, college ID and a letter from the college can be used as proof of age or education status.

Will I need to pay to get these discounts?

No, the key card is free and you only pay for the tickets you purchase.

What sort of ID do I need to register for a new key card?

To get a student key card, bring your college or university ID or proof of enrolment to Crawley Travel Shop after 13th December.

For Children 15 and under, bring any of the following forms of ID to Crawley Travel Shop:

  •  Transport for London child Oyster card
  • Passport
  • Birth certificate

I am a Surrey Student. Does this affect me?

No, although there is a minor change if you buy your ticket on the key online. From 13th December the Surrey Student Metrorider will no longer exist online but you will be able to purchase a Child Metrovoyager for the same price instead and this will give unlimited travel across the Metrobus network.
