The South Downs Heritage Centre is situated in South Downs Nurseries in Brighton Road, Hassocks. Alight at the Nurseries bus stop south of the crossroads of Brighton Road, Hurst Road, London Road and Keymer Road.
The Centre, which opened in 2008, houses a number of exhibitions of country crafts and skills, all of which are arranged in authentic settings. Fascinating static displays of countryside crafts and traditions include: a blacksmith’s forge, carpenter’s workshop, farm machinery, rope-making, trug-making and a re-creation of a local shop. Many of the items on show are arranged out in spaces so that visitors can see them from different viewpoints. Much of this collection was saved from another site in the county, and so now has a safe home for years to come.
Appropriately, as all the artifacts are located within a large plant nursery complex, there is also a Heritage Garden with floral exhibits from days gone by. Admission is free, but donations are welcome, and these are distributed among local charities.
The Olive Tree Café is situated in the Garden Centre.
We recommend that you visit www.south-downs.co.uk to confirm opening hours before making your journey, or call the South Downs Heritage Centre on 01273 845232.
